Well after a 3 day weekend of hard work on our rental home in Bunbury during the last weekend in March, the baby must have decided that it had had enough of full on activity and wanted out early. So on Thursday evening on the 3rd April after dinner, my waters broke. Not a major gush or anything but enough to know that I hadn't wet myself - this was it.
It took a while to convince Sean that we would be going to the hospital THAT night - he was in denial as "we have too many things still to do" in regards to the rental house and getting things done at our own home. After phoning around I tracked down a friend to come over to spend the night with Jasper while we headed into the Attadale hospital at 10 pm.
To spare you all of the boring details and to keep this part brief, basically after a 3.50hr active labour, we had another little boy born on Friday morning, April 4, weighing 6lb 9oz or 2.970kg and 48 cm long. He was exactly 3 weeks early, so a pretty decent size considering. He was unnamed for a few days (yes, I had been pestering Sean for months to settle on a name) and Sean was allowed the final decision from an approved short list and chose Zachary. We had already chosen Harris (my mother's maiden name) as his middle name.

On the scales
The midwife, Tracey was fantastic and I was very pleased with the birth experience. The obstetrician, Dr. Gunnell was also terrific - I'd only met him the previous day as my Ob had to go on early maternity leave herself.
Mum and dad came to Perth that afternoon to see their newest grandson and to help out with Jasper at home. Matt, my brother also came to visit me in hospital that afternoon. I felt very well, not too tired considering I hadn't slept the night before and these photos were taken the afternoon of Zachary's birth in the park outside the hospital.

1st few weeks
Well, I'm not going to sugar coat this - it's been tough, in fact the first 6 weeks have been. Zachary doesn't sleep as easily or as long as Jasper did, he wants to be cuddled all the time, but he's a good breast feeder, so that's his positive trait. I've been really tired this time and am getting up more often with Zachary and back into bed much later. Plus sneaking a day time nap only works if I can get both of them asleep at the same time (and not be tempted to do any house work or even make lunch!)
Also at 2.5 weeks Zach had an inflamed ear that gave him a fever and he was very unsettled and slept hardly at all for a few days. We got him sorted out with some antibiotics. He's also very colicky and is irritable for up to 2 hours after a feed. Then at 6 weeks I came down with mastitis and was on antibiotics myself - it's been very stressful and tiring to say the least.
1st bath in hospital. 8 days old. 1st bath at home. At Cottesloe 1 week old
On Poppo's bike. 3 wks old - on my due date.
